Every Minnesota spring, lake owners walk their shoreline and find stone that has bulged, tilted, or slipped over the winter. Frost heave and lake ice are relentless — and the fix is rarely just stacking the rock back up.
Frost heave happens when water trapped behind or beneath a wall freezes, expands, and shoves the structure out of alignment. If the original wall was built without a drainable base and proper backfill, it will keep happening. We don't just reset the stone — we correct the cause.
Our repair starts with a diagnosis: we find where water is collecting, whether the base failed, and how ice is loading the wall. Then we rebuild with filter fabric, washed-rock backfill, and a base keyed below the frost line so the repair rides out future freeze-thaw cycles instead of surrendering to them. Why does my boulder wall keep heaving every winter?
Almost always it's water and drainage. A wall built without filter fabric and washed-rock backfill traps water that freezes and pushes the stone. We rebuild with proper drainage so it stops.
Can you repair just the failed section?
Often, yes. If the rest of the wall is sound, we can rebuild only the heaved area and tie it back into the existing stone. We'll tell you honestly what needs to be redone.
